Principal's Update, October 4

Dear ARL Parents & Students,
After continuing my visitations to several of the ARL Academies during the past two weeks, I wanted to share several amazing experiences in which our students were engaged. Students in one of the Allied Health Academy classes had an opportunity to watch a video and learn about Abby and Brittany Lee Hensel, conjoined-teenage twins, dealing with the realities of simply being a teenager in their high-school setting. The health/nursing students asked thought-provoking medical questions about the girls’ lives and their social interactions at school. Students in the Biotechnology Academy were observing/investigating a planned mock “crime scene” called “Murder at the Bakery” to gather observations and eventually analyze DNA samples to speculate who might be involved in the crime. The Construction Academy students were engaged in a detailed Project Management activity in preparation for the demolition/deconstruction of a building constructed by students last year. Emphasis was placed on total quality management, and students teamed to develop meticulous plans for the project. The Hotel & Restaurant Management Academy enjoyed a professional pastry chef’s presentation and demonstration. Chef Lisa Haughie from the Culinary Institute of Virginia then asked students to participate in replicating the dish on their own. As a finale, students enjoyed tasting the dish and provided feedback. Additionally, students in the Finance Academy are designing a school store for ARL and had a wonderful opportunity to learn about “non-profit” organizations from Ms. Mimi O’Donnell from Leadership Howard County (an ARL Partner), who asked our students to get involved in non-profits in order to gain tremendous leadership, finance, and business experiences. Finally, a team of ARL teaches are forming a “Communications Committee” to design creative ways to enhance students’ engagement at the ARL and communicate more effectively with our parents, partners, and community. I hope you are enjoying this fall season. Thank you for sending your children to the ARL. I enjoyed meeting so many of our parents at ARL’s Back to School Night. Please contact me if I can be of any assistance.  Sincerely,
