Biotechnology II GT Partners with Biotech Company

Thu, 11/17/2016 - 12:58pm

On Wednesday, November 9, 2016 the Biotechnology II GT on-campus students took a field trip to Fort Smallwood State Park. The goal of this trip was to collect microbial samples for use in their Senior Project. The project involves a partnership with DMS Nutritional Products, LLC (formerly Martek) to discover natural sources of omega-3 fatty acids. The microbes collected will be cultured, isolated, and genetically analyzed for their potential to make omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are an important nutritional additive that play an essential role in brain health and development. This project allows students to contribute to the scientific communities understanding of microbial production of omega-3 fatty acids, as well as, participate in the discovery of commercially relevant microbes.
