Statement on Election and Civility

Presidential elections are a time when emotions run high.  We are a country of people with strong individual beliefs.  This year even more than in previous elections, the events of the months leading up to Tuesday’s election have led to strong emotions from people across the political spectrum.   Emotions are real and important.

We all need to keep in mind that what we are feeling might be very different than what someone else is feeling.  Our experiences shape who we are as individuals and those experiences vary greatly.  One of the best things about our school is that we are a community and as a community it is vital that our school is a safe place for all.  We value respect, civility and tolerance.  As you have conversations about the election, be sure to value the perspectives and viewpoints of others and take time to listen and reflect.

Two of our school system’s foundational policies the Civility policy and the Bullying, Cyberbullying, Harassment or Intimidation policy focus on the importance of treating others with respect.

Our democratic process is the envy of nations around the world.  Millions and millions of Americans voted in a peaceful and respectful manner.  As we move forward I know that we can uphold the principles on which our country was founded and has flourished.
